Accepting New Patients in MD & VA —

Unleash your moxie

What to expect when working with Rebecca Cooney

  • Evidence Based

I provide evidence-based therapy, choosing techniques that research shows are more likely to be effective for your problem. I primarily use cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), Dialectical-Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Mindfulness and Eye-Movement Desensitization Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR).

  • Telehealth Sessions

With telehealth, you can conveniently engage in therapy without having to commute to an office. You’ll need a private location with an internet connection and a device capable of videoconferencing (ideally a laptop, desktop, or tablet). Research has demonstrated that online therapy is just as effective as in-person therapy. You must be located in Maryland or Virginia at the time of our sessions, or the service I can provide to you may be limited or prohibited.

  • Culturally Informed

I practice cultural humility – a lifelong commitment to understanding my own and my clients’ cultural identities, privileges, and experiences of oppression. I regularly educate myself on the experiences of those who hold different identities than I do. We’ll integrate your cultural identities, values, and strengths into our therapy. I am LGBTQ+ affirming and often treat individuals going through gender transitions. I’m happy to provide letters in support of gender-affirming medical care to my current clients.

Learn about our services

  • You sense that a painful experience from your past is affecting your present life. You recognize that you're caught in a cycle, but finding a way out seems impossible. Typically, you're the kind of person who can navigate through any challenge, so it's incredibly frustrating that this time feels different. I specialize in working with adult & adolescents in the treatment of depression, anxiety, stress, relationship difficulties, family conflict, self-esteem, trauma, abuse, grief/loss and emotion dysregulation.

  • Once we have established safety and rapport we can begin EMDR, if that is something you are interested in. At Moxie, we consider it an honor to have guided many clients through EMDR and bear witness to healing, transformation and self-compassion. During EMDR sessions, clients are guided through a structured process to address and resolve trauma, and or negative core-beliefs keeping them stuck and/or engaging in harmful patterns.

  • We are BIG FANS of group work at Moxie. We have seen time and time again the clinical benefit of group therapy.

Currently, we are enrolling for EMBRACE YOUR MOXIE, women's trauma group, set to kick off October 1st.
